Connecting Gien Castle to its Landscape: Faunal, Environmental and Buildings Analyses (Loiret, France)

International audience; Gien castle is a listed monument of French architectural heritage. Today it houses the National Museum of Hunting and its collection. Organised visits to the site have traditionally lacked any clear mention of the castle’s historical background. Recently, however, archaeological excavations and building analysis in 2011–2015 produced a wealth of new knowledge about the castle’s medieval origins and history, and about its relationship to its landscape. L'abbaye Saint-Pierre de Flavigny à l'époque carolingienne

International audience; C’est sur un site privilégié, promontoire rocheux dominant la petite vallée de l’Ozerain, et à proximité de l’antique Alésia (à 60 kilomètres au Nord-Est de Dijon) que fut fondée, au début du VIlle siècle, l’abbaye Saint-Pierre de Flavigny. Elle fut l’objet de plusieurs constructions successives, dont certains vestiges, encore visibles de nos jours, nous éclairent sur son architecture à l’époque carolingienne. Plus de quinze ans se sont écoulés depuis les derniers travaux effectués dans l’abbaye, et nous avons pensé qu’il était nécessaire de faire le point sur ce que nous pouvons savoir de cet édifice et de son contexte historique. This article is a critical introduction to the Italian translation of Meyer's Canova monograph (1898), it focuses on the editorial process and on the use of photography during this early stage of popular art history. Further consideration is given to Meyer's critical point of view in the context of the German fin-de-siècle art discourse (Burckhardt, Springer, Bode, Wölfflin, Hildebrand).

The articles presented in this cluster discuss literary and visual impressions from the premise that literary impressionism and printmaking share the trope of impression as “impress” and as “imprints” in a technical and epistemological sense. Most works on Impressionism and literary impressionism dwell on the genealogy and mutual influence of fiction and painting, but few authors tackle the importance of printmaking. Willem Boshoff’s work articulates around a pivotal date, April 1994, the first democratic elections in South Africa. He may choose to work gigantic rocks of granite or establish vast installations of accumulated material. The artist claims that his work is based on language, often taking the form of Dictionaries. While reviewing the main questions by artists of the twentieth century, texts or artworks from Europe are systematically tested against their South African counterpart.
